Choosing the Music to Start Mixing<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>First we must take into consideration the music we are going to mix.<\/p>\n<p>There are many ways to mix and once you have learned the basic techniques, you can experiment without limits. However, we are going to start with the most basic but professional mixes. For this we must know that for a basic mix, <strong>all music is not useful<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We assume that we are going to work with electronic music genres. The normal thing is that the tracks, songs or original pieces are built with the complete structure, including some <strong>blocks that we call extended<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The most popular electronic music usually has radio editions, which summarize the track and eliminate the extended sections. <strong>These radio versions will not work for us.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To start with we will need tracks with extended blocks, now let&#8217;s see what they are.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:30px\"><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"11_What_are_EXTENDED_blocks\"><\/span>1.1 What are EXTENDED blocks?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Most electronic music tracks and songs usually have at the beginning and at the end some extra fragments, without too many sounds or too much melody, they are essentially rhythmic. <strong>They have a function of introduction, and progressive ending of the track.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is usually called &#8220;extended&#8221;. In fact, if we search on the internet for any song + &#8220;extended version&#8221;, we will find it with these extra blocks, which are not usually found in &#8216;Radio Edit&#8217; versions. But let&#8217;s keep in mind that this distinction usually only affects the most popular, mainstream music, since less commercial music doesn&#8217;t usually have radio editions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Extended Version:<\/strong> Original edition with its introductory blocks and ending blocks, we can also find them as &#8216;club mix&#8217;. (These are the ones we need to learn how to mix).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s listen to an example of extended blocks (<span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">first minute and last minute<\/span>):<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-youtube su-u-responsive-media-yes\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0IUNnyPWe7o?\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture\" title=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Radio Edit:<\/strong> Edited for a more general listener who is not so interested in listening to a complete piece, but in &#8216;getting to the point&#8217;, going straight to the points of greater emotionality and musicality, choruses, easy to remember phrases&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now let&#8217;s listen to the same track, on a radio edit and with vocals:<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-youtube su-u-responsive-media-yes\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tPbJ7YJVVLw?\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture\" title=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>As we can appreciate, besides eliminating the extended and adding a vocal, they have also &#8216;summarized&#8217; the track, with appreciable cuts with respect to the other one. With these versions we can&#8217;t learn how to DJ and mix. Since they start already with the vocal and with the melodies. <strong>It does not allow us a progressive mixing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:30px\"><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_How_to_mix_the_songs_Beat_Matching_Phrase_Matching\"><\/span>2. How to mix the songs: Beat Matching + Phrase Matching<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:30px\"><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"21_The_Musical_Phrases\"><\/span>2.1 The Musical Phrases<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Once we are clear about the right music, let&#8217;s take a look at some essential music theory to understand the mixes:<\/p>\n<p>Tracks can usually be divided into several<strong> blocks of 32 beats<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe beat normally coincide with the kick drum in most genres of electronic music, although not in all (Not in Drum&amp;Bass, Dubstep or Trap but in all derivatives of House, Dance, etc).<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes these blocks of 32 beats are very distinguishable between them almost without paying attention, because of the changes they present. For example: Downbeats, Upbeats, In and Out of Instruments, In and Out of Melodies&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><div class=\"su-note\"  style=\"border-color:#dcdca4;border-radius:17px;-moz-border-radius:17px;-webkit-border-radius:17px;\"><div class=\"su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"background-color:#f6f6be;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:17px;-moz-border-radius:17px;-webkit-border-radius:17px;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The blocks of 32 beats are called phrases.<br \/>\n<strong>32 beats = 1 phrase<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p>With this information we are going to move on to understanding the mix. This will be covered in more depth in the next chapter on <a href=\"https:\/\/djfuturo.com\/en\/count-music-beats-bars-phrases\/\">how to count beats, bars and phrases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:30px\"><\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"22_The_First_Mix_The_DJs_Mission_Beat_Match_Phrase_Match\"><\/span>2.2 The First Mix: The DJ&#8217;s Mission (Beat Match + Phrase Match)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Our mission as a DJ for a basic mix is to match two songs by <strong>synchronizing the beginning of a phrase of each song<\/strong>.
