Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What DJ software is recommended for beginners?

If you’re new to DJing, we recommend starting with free programs like Virtual DJ, Traktor DJ 2, or Serato DJ Lite. Virtual DJ is the most comprehensive, but simpler options may help you focus on the essentials as you begin learning.

Also, be sure to follow our free course “From 0 to DJ.”

Do I need to buy a physical controller to become a DJ?

Not at first. Many DJs begin by using DJ software with just their computer keyboard and mouse to understand the basic concepts and how everything works.

However, a DJ controller can improve your experience and help you learn advanced techniques more easily. Eventually, you’ll need to make the jump if you want to become a professional.

What equipment do I need to start as a DJ?

To start as a DJ, all you really need is a computer, DJ software (free or paid), and if you want to take it to the next level, a controller. But as mentioned in the previous question, you can start with just a computer and software.

Over time, you can add speakers, professional headphones, and other accessories.

What’s the difference between DJ software and a DAW?

DJ software like Serato DJ or Virtual DJ is primarily designed for live mixing of tracks, whereas a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) like FL Studio or Ableton Live is used more for studio music production—creating and editing music from scratch.

Although Ableton Live is somewhat unique because it also has features for live performances.

What’s the best DAW for producing electronic music?

The most popular DAWs for electronic music production right now are Logic Pro, Ableton Live, and FL Studio.

Each has its advantages, but in general, Ableton Live is favored for its flexibility in both production and live performances. However, Mac users often prefer Logic Pro.

Are there free versions of DJ software and DAWs?

Yes, all the DJ software and DAWs listed on this site offer free versions, some with limited features and others with special licenses allowing free use.

Virtual DJ, for example, is completely free for home use. Reaper (DAW) offers a full version with the request that you contribute payment after a trial period, though you can continue using it afterward.

Other programs may offer feature-limited or time-limited free versions.

How can I improve my DJ skills?

The key is consistent practice. It’s not about doing long practice sessions but rather staying consistent over time.

We also recommend following our tutorials to build a solid foundation. In our free course, you’ll find exercises to help you improve your skills.
